Jack-up rigs: technical overview

A self-elevating platform for offshore drilling.

A jack-up rig is a type of mobile offshore drilling unit (MODU) used for oil and gas exploration and production. It is a self-elevating platform with legs that can be lowered to the seafloor, allowing the rig to “jack up” above the water surface.

Key components

Hull: the main floating structure, providing buoyancy and housing equipment
Legs: typically 3–4 tubular steel columns that can be raised or lowered
Jacking system: hydraulic or electric system used to raise or lower the legs
Spud cans: large circular or polygonal plates at the end of each leg, providing stability on the seafloor
Drilling equipment: includes derrick, drawworks and other drilling machinery

Transit: the rig moves to location with legs raised
